Overview and Structure
In Germany, primary education (Grundschule) typically starts at age 6 and lasts for four years, although in some federal states it can last up to six years. Classes usually take place from Monday to Friday, with times varying depending on the state.
Core Subjects
The core curriculum includes German, Mathematics, General Studies, and Physical Education. Some schools also offer a foreign language, usually English, starting in the third grade.
Assessment and Grading
Assessment is conducted through oral and written evaluations. Initially, most schools provide descriptive reports instead of traditional grades. However, at the end of primary school, students generally receive numerical grades to evaluate their performance.
Transition to Secondary School
After completing primary school, students transition to secondary school. The type of secondary school they attend depends on their performance, teacher recommendations, and parental choice. Options include Gymnasium (academic track), Realschule (intermediate education track), and Hauptschule (vocational preparation).
Communication between Parents and Teachers
Although formal support services at the primary level are generally not available, parents can consult teachers regarding academic or social concerns about their children.
