Decision for Secondary School in Germany 2025

The decision for secondary school (weiterführende Schule) in Germany depends on the academic performance and individual interests of the student. There are various types of schools, including the Gymnasium, the Realschule, the Hauptschule, and Gesamtschulen, which offer different educational paths and qualifications.

Types of Schools in Germany

In Germany, there are various types of schools that can be attended after primary school. The Gymnasium leads to the General University Entrance Qualification (Abitur) and is suitable for students aiming for higher education. The Realschule offers a secondary education degree, which qualifies for various vocational professions or allows for a transition to further educational programs. The Hauptschule primarily prepares students for manual and commercial vocational training (Ausbildung) and usually ends with the Hauptschulabschluss. Gesamtschulen combine all types of schools and enable students to achieve different qualifications based on their performance.

Transition after Primary School

The transition to a secondary school usually occurs after the 4th grade. The decision on which type of school a student should attend is based on the recommendation from their primary school. This recommendation is based on academic performance as well as the assessment of teachers. In some federal states, parents also have a say in the school choice, while in others, the school’s recommendation primarily determines the decision.

Gymnasium

The Gymnasium is the school type that leads to the General University Entrance Qualification (Abitur). The standard duration is eight or nine years (G8 or G9), depending on the federal state. A student who successfully completes the Gymnasium can then study at universities and colleges. The Gymnasium focuses on a broad, general education with a strong emphasis on theoretical knowledge and is suitable for students who aspire to academic careers.

Realschule

The Realschule provides a secondary education degree (Realschulabschluss or Mittlere Reife) and typically lasts six years. After graduation, students can begin vocational training (Ausbildung) or switch to a technical college (FOS) or a vocational Gymnasium to obtain the Abitur. The Realschule places more emphasis on practical-oriented teaching than the Gymnasium but still provides a solid general education.

Hauptschule

The Hauptschule imparts basic general education and prepares students for entry into vocational training (Ausbildung). The Hauptschulabschluss is achieved after the 9th or 10th grade. Students who achieve a good Hauptschulabschluss can also switch to vocational schools or, in some cases, to a Realschule or a vocational Gymnasium.

Gesamtschule

The Gesamtschule unites various types of schools under one roof. It offers the advantage that students can achieve different qualifications based on their performance without having to change schools. In the Gesamtschule, both the Hauptschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss, and the Abitur can be obtained. This type of school offers more flexibility and promotes individual support for students.
