Language Skills for Studying in Germany 2025

Language skills are an important prerequisite for successful studies in Germany. In general, adequate German language skills must be demonstrated. For some degree programs, especially international or English-language ones, English language skills may also be required.

German Language Skills

To study in Germany, students usually need to demonstrate German language skills at least at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER). There are various exams that certify the required language skills, such as TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-Zertifikat, or Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule.

English Language Skills

For international or English-language degree programs, adequate English language skills are often required. These can be demonstrated through various exams like TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge certificates. The required minimum scores may vary depending on the university and degree program.

Language Courses and Preparation

If language skills are not yet sufficient, students can take language courses to improve their German or English skills. Many universities offer their own language courses or collaborate with language schools. Additionally, there are special preparation courses designed to prepare students for language exams.

Recognition of Language Certificates

The recognition of language certificates depends on the respective university and degree program. It is important to inform oneself early about the requirements and deadlines and to acquire the relevant language certificate in good time. In some cases, it may be necessary to present the language certificate when applying for a study place.

Exceptions and Alternatives

In some cases, applicants may be exempt from language requirements or provide alternative proof. For example, students who have already studied in a German-speaking country or attended a German-speaking school may be exempt from the requirement to demonstrate German language skills. In international degree programs, the language of instruction may be partially or fully in English, so German language skills are not necessarily required.
