BAföG for Studies in Germany 2025

BAföG, the Federal Training Assistance Act, provides financial support for students in Germany. It aims to ensure equal educational opportunities, regardless of the financial situation of the parents.

Eligibility Requirements

BAföG is granted to German students as well as certain groups of foreigners studying in Germany. Requirements include age, type of training (Ausbildung), and parents’ income.

Amount of Funding

The amount of BAföG funding depends on the income and assets of the parents, the student, and the spouse. The maximum funding currently amounts to 934 euros per month.

Repayment

BAföG is granted half as a grant and half as an interest-free loan. Repayment of the loan begins five years after the end of the standard study duration and is limited to a specific amount.

Application Process

The application for BAföG must be submitted in writing to the responsible Office for Educational Support. Processing can take several weeks, so the application should be submitted well in advance.

Special Features

Students with children and students with disabilities may receive additional benefits. There is also the possibility of foreign BAföG for study stays abroad, with the amount of funding and conditions varying depending on the destination country.
