General Rule: Age Limit up to 30 Years
The general rule states that the applicant must not have turned 30 at the beginning of the eligible vocational training (Ausbildung). This age limit applies to most training programs, including school-based vocational training at vocational schools, technical schools, and universities. The purpose of this age limit is to focus funding on individuals who are at the beginning of their professional careers.
Exceptions: Age Limit up to 35 Years
In certain exceptional cases, BAföG can also be granted until the age of 35. These exceptions primarily apply to the following groups:
- Second Vocational Training (Ausbildung): Individuals who pursue further training after completing an initial vocational training (Ausbildung) may receive BAföG up to the age of 35 under certain conditions. This especially applies if the second educational path is necessary to advance professionally or to learn a new profession.
- Advanced Training: For advanced vocational training such as master craftsmen, technicians, or business administrators, funding can be granted up to the age of 35 within the framework of the advanced BAföG. This regulation also enables professionals who have been in the workforce for a while to complete further qualifications.
- Special Personal Circumstances: If the applicant could only start training later due to compelling personal reasons, such as illness, child-rearing, or caring for relatives, funding can also be granted up to the age of 35. However, these circumstances must be substantiated with corresponding evidence.
Advanced Training and BAföG
Within the framework of the so-called advanced BAföG (formerly master BAföG), vocational training that leads to a higher qualification can be funded. An age limit of 35 years applies here. This regulation aims to enable experienced professionals to pursue qualified training and career advancement.
Second Vocational Training (Ausbildung) and Age Limit
Those who have already completed an initial vocational training (Ausbildung) and wish to take up a second vocational training (Ausbildung) may also receive BAföG in certain cases if they have not yet exceeded the age of 35. The second vocational training (Ausbildung) must be based on a professional reorientation or a necessary career advancement. This often concerns individuals who want to choose a new career path after several years of employment.
Special Regulations for Certain Training Paths
For some special training paths, such as the second educational path (e.g. evening gymnasium, college), special age limits apply. Here, BAföG may also be granted if the applicant has already turned 30, as these educational forms are often attended by individuals who were already employed and later want to obtain a higher school qualification.
