Parents' Income

Financial Situation: Parents’ Income for Claiming Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) to Finance the Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

The parents' income is taken into account when calculating the Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe), as they are obligated under maintenance law to financially support their children during their first training (Ausbildung).

Consideration of Parental Income

The Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) is granted in full only if the parents’ income is below certain exemption limits. The Employment Agency takes into account the parents’ income when calculating the BAB, as parents are legally obligated to financially support their children during their first vocational training (Ausbildung).

Exemption Limits for Parental Income

Various exemption limits are considered when calculating parental income to ensure that only income exceeding the need is counted. These include:

  • Exemption limits for the parents themselves
  • Exemption limits for additional dependent children
  • Standard deductions for job-related expenses of the parents

Only the income remaining after deducting these exemptions is taken into account when calculating the BAB.

Proof of Parental Income

To apply for the BAB, parents must provide proof of their income. Required are:

  • Pay slips from the last three months
  • Annual tax assessment
  • Certificates of other income, such as rental or capital income

If the parents are self-employed, they must submit a profit and loss statement or the latest tax assessment.

Special Regulations for Divorced Parents

If the vocational trainee’s (Auszubildenden) parents are living apart, only the income of the supporting parent is considered. If both parents are required to pay support, a proportional calculation of both parents’ incomes will take place. The support agreements must be documented accordingly.

No Claim with High Parental Income

If the parents’ income exceeds the established exemption limits, the right to BAB may be entirely or partially eliminated. In such cases, it is assumed that the parents are capable of providing financial support to the trainee (Auszubildenden).

Exceptions to the Consideration of Parental Income

In certain cases, the parents’ income is not taken into account. This applies when:

  • the trainee is already 25 years old or older,
  • the trainee is married or in a registered partnership,
  • the trainee has children of their own and takes care of them in their own household.

In these cases, the Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) is calculated independently of the parents’ income.

Relevance of Parental Income for the Amount of BAB

The parents’ income has a significant impact on the amount of the BAB benefit. The higher the parents’ income, the less the financial assistance. To accurately determine the actual entitlement, the Employment Agency examines the parents’ income in detail, taking into account all relevant exemption limits.

Important Notes for Parents

Parents should submit the required proof of their income completely and on time to avoid delays in processing the BAB application. If there are uncertainties about the required documents or the consideration of income, parents and trainees (Auszubildenden) can contact the Employment Agency.
