Income Limits of Parents for Bafög to Finance Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

The income limits of parents play a central role in the approval of Bafög for financing vocational training (Ausbildung) in Germany. Since Bafög is a social benefit, the financial situation of the parents is taken into account when calculating the funding amount. Only if the parents' income falls below certain legally defined limits can the trainee receive full funding. If the income exceeds the established limits, the entitlement will be reduced accordingly or completely eliminated.

Basic Exemption

The basic exemption protects parents' income partially from being counted towards Bafög needs. For the first parent, the exemption is €2,415 per month, and for the second parent, it is €1,605.

Additional Children

The allowance for additional children partially protects parents' income from being counted towards Bafög need. An additional monthly allowance of 605 euros is granted for each dependent child.

Spouses Parents

The amount for spouses of parents protects part of the income from being considered towards the BAföG needs. This amount currently stands at 1,605 euros per month.

Income Consideration Parents

The consideration of the parents' income for BAföG is done after the legally defined exempt amounts have been deducted. Only the income that exceeds the exempt amounts is proportionally considered for the applicant's BAföG needs.
