Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) in the Second Educational Path for Financing Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) can also be applied for in the second educational path to finance vocational training (Ausbildung), provided that the training is dual and that the general funding conditions are met.

Eligibility for BAB in the Second Educational Path

Apprentices who acquire their professional qualification through the second educational path are entitled to Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) under certain conditions. The second educational path includes measures such as retraining, completing initial vocational training, or professional reorientation after a longer break from employment.

Requirements for Funding

The funding through BAB in the second educational path is tied to the same basic requirements as in a regular dual training program. These include:

  • The training must take place in a recognized training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or the Crafts Code (HwO).
  • There must be a written training contract between the apprentice and the company.
  • The income of the apprentice as well as that of their parents or spouse must not exceed certain exemption amounts.

Special Regulations for Older Apprentices

Since many apprentices in the second educational path are already over 25 years old, special regulations apply to them. In such cases, the income of the parents is no longer taken into account. Instead, the calculation of the BAB benefit is based solely on the apprentice’s own income and that of their spouse, if applicable.

Required Documentation

To apply for BAB in the second educational path, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Training contract
  • Proof of residence
  • Evidence of Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung)
  • Income statements of the apprentice and possibly of the spouse
  • Rental agreement if the apprentice lives outside the parents’ home

Calculation of BAB Benefit

The calculation of the BAB benefit is based on the usual criteria. The need is determined and offset against the qualifying income. The considered needs include:

  • Basic needs for living expenses
  • Housing allowance for independent households
  • Flat rate for travel costs between home and training location

Duration of Funding

The BAB benefit is granted for the entire duration of training in the second educational path, as long as the eligibility requirements continue to be met. After the approval period of twelve months has expired, an application for renewal must be submitted.

Important Notes

Apprentices who wish to apply for funding in the second educational path should seek advice from the Employment Agency early on. The application should be complete and submitted on time to avoid delays in processing. The Employment Agency offers comprehensive support for uncertainties regarding eligibility requirements.
