Living with Parents
Many trainees opt to live with their parents for financial reasons during their vocational training (Ausbildung). In this case, there are no additional rent costs, which can be advantageous for trainees with low incomes. However, the commute may be longer depending on the location of the training company.
Own Apartment
Trainees who wish to live independently can choose to have their own apartment. This is often associated with high costs, especially in large cities. In addition to rent, trainees must also cover additional expenses such as electricity, water, and internet. Many landlords also require a rental deposit, which usually amounts to two to three months’ rent. An important financial aspect for trainees in this living situation is the possibility to apply for Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) if their own means are insufficient.
Shared Housing (WG)
Another option for trainees is living in a shared apartment (WG). Here, one shares an apartment with several people, which reduces rental costs. Besides the financial savings, a shared apartment also offers social benefits as living together can make daily life easier. However, this form of housing also requires a willingness to compromise, as common areas like kitchens and bathrooms are shared.
Vocational Training Assistance (BAB)
Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) can be applied for by trainees who do not live with their parents and whose vocational training compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) is insufficient to cover living costs. The amount of BAB depends on the income of the parents as well as the trainee’s own earnings. BAB can be used for both rent costs and other essential living expenses. It’s important that the training institution is recognized and eligible for funding to ensure the application is approved.
Residential Homes for Trainees
In some cities, there are special residential homes for trainees that offer affordable accommodation. These homes usually provide furnished rooms as well as communal areas that can be used by all residents. The costs are generally lower than those of an independent apartment, and often additional expenses like electricity and internet are already included in the rent. This form of housing is particularly attractive for trainees coming from other cities who are looking for an affordable living solution.
Housing Allowance
Trainees who are not entitled to BAB can apply for housing allowance under certain conditions. This government subsidy program helps individuals with low incomes to cover their rent costs. Whether a trainee receives housing allowance depends on the level of vocational training compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) and housing costs. It must be applied for individually and is granted after reviewing the financial situation.
Part-Time Jobs for Financing
Some trainees take on a part-time job to cover their living expenses during vocational training (Ausbildung). Especially in more expensive cities, a side job may be necessary to afford their own apartment or shared room. However, the part-time work must not interfere with the training schedule and should be conducted in consultation with the training company. Additionally, earning limits must be observed to avoid tax and social contributions.
