Basic Needs for Financing Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

The basic needs represent a central component of the Bafög calculation and signify the financial amount that an applicant receives monthly to cover general living costs during the vocational training (Ausbildung). This amount is granted irrespective of individual additional costs like rent or health insurance and aims to cover the essential expenditures.

Definition of Basic Needs

The basic needs refer to the fixed monthly amount that all eligible trainees receive, provided they meet the requirements for Bafög. The basic needs depend on the type of educational institution attended, with different rates applicable for students from vocational schools, technical schools, and other educational institutions.

Basic Needs Rates by Type of Training

The amount of basic needs varies depending on the type of vocational training. For students and trainees at vocational and technical schools, different rates apply:

  • Students from Vocational Schools: Students who pursue a full-time vocational training at vocational schools and live with their parents receive a basic need of currently 247 euros per month.
  • Students from Technical Schools: For students from technical schools aiming for a higher school degree, the basic need is also 247 euros if they live in their parental home.
  • Trainees with their Own Household: Students who maintain their own household during the training receive a higher basic need, currently at 585 euros.

Additional Types of Needs

The basic needs can be supplemented by various additional types of needs tailored to the individual situation of the applicant. These include:

  • Housing Needs: An allowance for trainees who do not live in their parental home, currently up to 360 euros per month.
  • Health and Care Insurance Allowance: An allowance is granted for trainees who are themselves insured for health and care. This currently amounts to 94 euros for health insurance and 28 euros for care insurance.
  • Additional Needs for Single Parents: Single-parent trainees receive an additional allowance to support their living situation.

Importance of Basic Needs

The basic needs form the foundation of Bafög funding, ensuring that all funded trainees receive a fixed minimum amount to cover their living costs. The basic needs are complemented by further need rates that are adjusted to individual circumstances such as housing costs and health insurance.

Calculation of the Funding Amount

The final funding amount consists of the basic needs and possible additional need rates. The calculated total needs are reduced by the applicant’s computable income as well as the income and assets of the parents. The remaining amount is paid out as a monthly Bafög benefit.
