Legal Basis for Parental Support
Parents are legally obligated under § 1610 of the German Civil Code (BGB) to finance an education or Vocational Training (Ausbildung) for their children that aligns with their abilities and interests. This obligation typically ends upon the completion of the child’s first professional training or degree. However, in specific circumstances, such as health issues or other significant reasons, this support may need to be extended. Parents are generally not obligated to finance a second qualification unless the first one was insufficient or could not be completed due to valid reasons.
Amount of Financial Support
The amount of parental financial support depends on various factors. These include the parents’ income, the child’s individual cost of living, and additional costs associated with Vocational Training (Ausbildung). Such costs might involve tuition fees, study materials, or travel expenses. Although there is no fixed amount parents are required to provide, they should at least cover their child’s basic living costs. If the parents’ income is low, the trainee may qualify for government assistance, such as Bafög (Federal Training Assistance Act).
Independent Funding for Vocational Training (Ausbildung)
In certain cases, it is possible to secure educational funding without relying on parental income. This option is particularly relevant for older trainees who have already completed one professional qualification or are otherwise deemed financially independent. Trainees whose parents refuse to support them or are unable to provide support may also be eligible for state financial aid.
Synergy with Other Funding Sources
Parental support can be combined with other forms of funding, such as government subsidies, scholarships, or part-time jobs. For trainees receiving Bafög, parental income is taken into account when calculating the amount of financial aid, as this assistance is meant to bridge gaps in funding when parental support is insufficient. However, this may result in reduced state funding for individuals with higher parental contributions.
Practical Implementation of Parental Support
Parental support can be provided in various ways. Some parents opt for monthly transfers to cover rent and living expenses, while others offer free accommodation and meals at home, thereby saving costs on rent and utilities. Additionally, parents may choose to finance major purchases, such as a car or computer, that are necessary for Vocational Training (Ausbildung).
Communication and Agreements Between Parents and Trainees
Clear communication between parents and trainees regarding financial support is essential to avoid misunderstandings. Many families choose to formalize these arrangements in written agreements, specifying the extent and duration of the support. This helps prevent conflicts and provides clarity about each party’s obligations and expectations.
