Requirements
To pursue a master’s training, it is generally required to have completed a Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in a skilled trade and to have subsequent work experience. The exact duration of the necessary work experience may vary by craft but typically ranges from one to three years.
Structure of the Master Training
The master training is divided into four parts:
- Practical Skills: Deepening practical skills in the respective skilled trade
- Theoretical Knowledge: Conveying theoretical expertise
- Business Administration and Law: Basics of business management and legal aspects
- Vocational and Work Pedagogy: Qualification to train apprentices
Master Title in the Skilled Trades
The master title is especially common in skilled trades and is legally protected in many professions. Examples of master titles in skilled trades include:
- Painter and Varnisher Master (Maler- und Lackierermeister)
- Carpenter Master (Tischlermeister)
- Electrician Master (Elektrikermeister)
- Baker Master (Bäckermeister)
- Butcher Master (Metzgermeister)
Industrial Master
In the industrial sector, there is the title of Industrial Master, which is similarly structured to the skilled trade master. However, specific industrial knowledge is conveyed here. Examples of Industrial Masters include:
- Industrial Master Metal (Industriemeister Metall)
- Industrial Master Chemistry (Industriemeister Chemie)
- Industrial Master Electrical Engineering (Industriemeister Elektrotechnik)
Career Perspectives
With the master title, numerous professional advancement opportunities open up. Masters often assume leadership roles in companies, manage teams or departments, and are responsible for training apprentices. The master title also qualifies one to start their own skilled trade business and can pave the way to self-employment.
Master Examination
The master examination consists of the four parts mentioned above. It is conducted by the Chambers of Crafts (HWK) or the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK). Upon successful completion, the master certificate is awarded, confirming the acquired qualification.
Funding and Financing
The master training can be subsidized by what is known as “Master-BAföG” (Aufstiegs-BAföG). This financial support consists of a grant and a low-interest loan, which can be partially waived after passing the examination.
