Living at Parental Home
Apprentices living at their parental home during their training (Ausbildung) can also apply for vocational training assistance (BAB). However, the entitlement is limited, as no additional costs for rent and meals are considered in this case. The amount of support primarily depends on the vocational training compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) and the parents’ income.
Independent Living Outside the Parental Home
A higher entitlement to BAB exists if the apprentice moves into their own apartment or room during the training (Ausbildung). A condition for this is that the parental home is too far from the training establishment, making a daily return unreasonable. In such cases, rent costs and a contribution to living expenses are taken into account.
Proof of Housing Situation
To apply for BAB, proof of the housing situation must be provided. This includes:
- Address registration certificate of the main residence
- Rental agreement for independent living
- Possibly a confirmation from the training company regarding the distance between the training location and the parental home
This documentation serves to calculate the amount of support correctly and to verify eligibility requirements.
Unreasonable Distance to the Training Establishment
Independent living is supported if the parental home is too far from the training establishment. A commuting time of more than two hours daily is considered unreasonable. If the distance is less, there is generally no entitlement to BAB for independent living.
Living in a Shared Apartment
Living in a shared apartment (WG) can also be supported if the apprentice has their own rental share, which can be verified. The rental share must be specified in the rental agreement or in a written agreement with the roommates. The amount of the rent subsidy is based on the actual costs.
Living in One’s Own Apartment
Apprentices who live alone in their own apartment usually receive the highest support since the total rent costs are considered. A condition is that the rent is reasonable and can be substantiated with appropriate proof.
Special Considerations for Subletting
If the apprentice sublets a room, this may affect the amount of BAB benefits. Income from subletting is counted as income and reduces the entitlement to BAB. In such cases, it is important to report the subletting to the employment agency.
Change of Housing Situation During Training
If the housing situation changes during the training (Ausbildung) period, for example, due to a move, the employment agency must be informed immediately. The amount of support will be recalculated in such cases, taking into account the current rent and living costs.
Relevance of Housing Situation for BAB Amount
The housing situation has a significant impact on the amount of vocational training assistance (BAB). While additional costs such as rent and meals are supported for independent living, apprentices at parental home receive only basic support. Therefore, a thorough examination of the housing situation is crucial for both eligibility and the amount of BAB benefits.
