Eligibility for BAB during a retraining
Even during a company retraining, there is entitlement to Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) under certain conditions. The retraining must take place in a recognized vocational training occupation and be accompanied by a company and a vocational school, similar to a dual vocational training.
Conditions for funding
To receive BAB during the retraining, the following conditions must be met:
- The retraining takes place in a recognized vocational training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or Crafts Code (HwO).
- A written retraining contract between the retraining participant and the company exists.
- The retraining is conducted on a full-time basis.
- The income of the retraining participant and their parents or spouse is not sufficient to secure their livelihood during the retraining.
Required documents
For applying for BAB during the retraining, the following documents must be submitted:
- Retraining contract
- Proof of vocational training compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) during the retraining
- Rental agreement, if the retraining participant lives outside their parents’ home
- Income proofs of the parents or spouse
- Registration certificate of residence
Calculation of BAB benefits
The calculation of BAB during a retraining is done based on the same criteria as for an initial vocational training. The needs of the retraining participant are determined and offset against their assessable income. The considered needs include:
- Flat-rate for living costs
- Flat-rate for housing costs (if living outside the parents’ house)
- Flat-rate for transportation costs between the residence and training location
Duration of funding
The Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) is granted for the entire duration of the retraining. If the retraining duration is extended, a request for continued funding is required. The funding ends with the successful completion of the retraining.
Special regulations
In certain cases, such as retraining due to health restrictions or professional reorientation, additional support services may be provided. This includes grants for special expenses, such as specific work clothing or necessary aids.
Important notes
Retraining participants should submit their BAB application early to receive financial support in time. For questions regarding the application or requirements, the Employment Agency offers advisory services. A complete submission of all required documents is important to avoid delays.
