Asset Limits of Applicants for Bafög Financing of Vocational Training (Berufsausbildung) in Germany 2025

In addition to the income limits of parents, the asset limits of applicants play a significant role in the approval of Bafög for financing vocational training (Berufsausbildung) in Germany. Applicants with their own assets must initially use a portion of these for financing their training before being eligible for state support. The Federal Training Assistance Act regulates the non-contributory amount of assets and how assets are considered.

Objection Asset Assessment

An objection against the asset assessment for Bafög can be filed if the applicant believes that assets have been inaccurately assessed. The objection must be made in writing within one month of receiving the notification.

Allowance

The applicant's assets are only partially considered under BAföG, as a certain amount is deemed non-contributory. Currently, the non-contributory asset limit is 15,000 euros for applicants up to 29 years old and 45,000 euros for those aged 30 and older.

Asset Consideration

The applicant's assets are considered for BAföG if they exceed the legally defined exemptions. Different asset types such as bank savings, real estate, and securities are taken into account.

Exceptions

Not all assets are considered in the Bafög calculation. Exceptions include certain types of assets deemed non-touchable, as well as purpose-bound assets that serve to secure the livelihood.
