Residence in Germany
One of the fundamental requirements to receive BAB is a legal and permanent residence in Germany. The applicant must be registered in Germany and have their main residence here. Proof of residence is typically provided through a registration certificate from the residents’ registration office.
Independent Living During Vocational Training (Ausbildung)
There is often a claim to BAB if the trainee does not live with their parents during vocational training (Ausbildung). A prerequisite is that the parental home is too far from the training company, making daily commuting unreasonable. In such cases, the need for rent and living expenses is particularly taken into account.
Residence in the Parental Home
Also, trainees who live in the parental home during vocational training (Ausbildung) may receive BAB under certain circumstances. However, the claim is restricted in such cases, as no additional costs for rent and meals are considered. The decisive factors are the parents’ income as well as the trainee’s own income.
Proof of Residence
To apply for BAB, proof of residence is required. This is done by presenting a current registration certificate. If the trainee lives outside the parental home, the rental agreement must also be provided to prove the amount of rent costs.
Change of Residence During Vocational Training (Ausbildung)
If the trainee moves during the receipt of BAB, this must be reported to the employment agency immediately. A move can affect the entitlement to BAB, especially if it results in an increase or decrease in rental costs. In such cases, the claim will be recalculated.
No Claim if Residence is Abroad
Entitlement to BAB only exists if the trainee has their residence in Germany. Persons who have their main center of life abroad or who live there while completing vocational training (Ausbildung) in Germany are excluded from receiving vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe).
Special Regulations for Cross-Border Trainees
Trainees living in border areas and undertaking a dual vocational training (Ausbildung) in Germany can apply for BAB under certain conditions. A prerequisite is that the training company is located in Germany and the trainee commutes there regularly. The employment agency makes individual decisions in such cases.
Relevance of Residence for the Amount of Funding
The residence not only influences eligibility but also the amount of the BAB benefit. Trainees living outside the parental home generally receive higher funding, as rent costs and additional living expenses are taken into account. The exact amount depends on the individual living situation and the proven costs.
