Housing Allowance

Housing Allowance in the Calculation of Support for Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) for Financing Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

The housing allowance for Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) to finance Vocational Training (Ausbildung) is granted if the trainee lives outside of the parents' home during their training. It covers the costs of rent and additional expenses.

Importance of the Housing Allowance

The housing allowance is an integral part of the BAB calculation and is granted when the trainee lives outside of their parents’ home. It is intended to cover the incurred rental costs as well as the cold operating costs (e.g., water, waste disposal). Heating and electricity costs are not covered by the housing allowance.

Amount of the Housing Allowance

The amount of the housing allowance is based on the actual rental burden of the trainee, but only up to a predetermined upper limit. This upper limit varies depending on the region and rental level. Currently, the maximum recognized housing allowance is about 350 euros per month.

Proof of Rental Costs

To receive the housing allowance, trainees must provide proof of their rental costs. Required documents include:

  • A copy of the rental agreement
  • Proof of actual rent payment (e.g., bank statements or receipts)

The Employment Agency reviews the proofs and determines the allowable housing allowance.

Housing Allowance for Shared Accommodations

Trainees living in shared accommodations (WG) can also apply for the housing allowance. In this case, the individual rental share of the trainee is considered, which must be documented in the rental contract or a written agreement with the roommates.

No Housing Allowance for Living at Parents’ Home

No housing allowance is granted for trainees who live at home with their parents during their vocational training (Ausbildung). Instead, a lower allowance for living expenses is provided.

Special Regulations

In certain cases, such as the trainee having a severe disability, an additional allowance for rental costs may be granted. This allowance is intended to cover the increased costs for a barrier-free apartment.

Changes in Living Situation

If the living situation changes during the receipt of BAB, for example due to a move, this must be reported to the Employment Agency immediately. A change in living situation can affect the amount of the housing allowance and therefore the overall BAB benefit.

Important Notes

The housing allowance is only recognized up to the specified upper limit, even if the actual rental costs are higher. Trainees should ensure that all required proofs are submitted completely and on time to avoid delays in processing the application.
