Financial Requirements for BAföG to Finance Vocational Training (Berufsausbildung) in Germany 2025

The financial requirements for obtaining BAföG support play a crucial role in ensuring that vocational trainees can focus on their education.

Understanding Financial Aid for Vocational Training

The financial prerequisites for BAföG include income and asset limits of the trainee as well as those of the parents or spouse. If these limits exceed the established allowances, BAföG may be reduced or completely eliminated.

Consideration of Personal Income

Personal income of the trainee is taken into account for BAföG if it exceeds the allowance of currently €520 per month. Amounts exceeding this threshold will be deducted from the BAföG benefits accordingly, thereby reducing the total amount received.

Income Limits

The income limits of parents play a central role in the approval of Bafög for financing vocational training (Ausbildung) in Germany. Since Bafög is a social benefit, the financial situation of the parents is taken into account when calculating the funding amount. Only if the parents' income falls below certain legally defined limits can the trainee receive full funding. If the income exceeds the established limits, the entitlement will be reduced accordingly or completely eliminated.

Asset Limits

In addition to the income limits of parents, the asset limits of applicants play a significant role in the approval of Bafög for financing vocational training (Berufsausbildung) in Germany. Applicants with their own assets must initially use a portion of these for financing their training before being eligible for state support. The Federal Training Assistance Act regulates the non-contributory amount of assets and how assets are considered.
