Rental Agreement

Required Documents: Rental Agreement for Receiving Housing Benefit to Finance Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

A valid rental agreement is a mandatory requirement for receiving housing benefits. It serves as proof of the amount of rent and the applicant's independent living situation.

Importance of the Rental Agreement

The rental agreement is one of the most important documents that must be submitted when applying for housing benefits. It proves that the applicant is indeed the tenant of the apartment and pays rent regularly. Without a valid rental agreement, no housing benefit can be granted.

Content Requirements for the Rental Agreement

The rental agreement must contain specific information to be accepted as proof. This includes:

  • Name and address of the landlord
  • Name of the tenant (applicant)
  • Address of the rented apartment
  • Amount of monthly rent (basic rent and utilities)
  • Start date of the tenancy

Missing information can lead to the housing benefit office not processing the application or requesting further proof.

Additional Proof of Rent

In addition to the rental agreement, the housing benefit office often requires additional proof of actual rent payments. This includes bank statements or receipts from the landlord showing that the rent is paid regularly. This proof is particularly important when the amount of rent stated in the application differs from that in the rental agreement.

Rental Agreement for Subletting

Apprentices living as subtenants must submit a sublease agreement. This should also include all essential information, particularly the amount of rent and the consent of the main tenant for subletting. The housing benefit office reviews the sublease agreement and may require additional evidence, such as written confirmation from the main tenant.

Joint Rental Agreement in Shared Apartments

If the apprentice lives in a shared apartment and is listed as a main tenant in the contract along with the roommates, their portion of the rent must be clearly specified. In such cases, a written agreement among the roommates regarding the division of rental costs may also be required.

Changes in the Tenancy

If changes in the tenancy occur during the receipt of housing benefits, such as a rent increase or a change of apartment, this must be reported to the housing benefit office immediately. Typically, a new housing benefit application with the updated rental agreement is required in such cases.

Submission of Missing Documents

If the rental agreement is not fully available at the time of application, the application can initially be submitted without this document. However, the rental agreement must be submitted within a specific timeframe afterward, as otherwise, the application will be rejected. The housing benefit office will inform the applicant about the submission deadline.
