Basic Regulations for Funding
The Bafög law provides for the funding of trainings that are completed in full-time. For part-time vocational trainings, the entitlement to Bafög usually does not apply, as it is assumed that the applicant can undertake gainful employment alongside the training. However, there are exceptions where part-time vocational training can also be funded.
Exceptions for Part-Time Vocational Training
In certain cases, part-time vocational training can nevertheless be supported if there are special reasons. These include:
- Health Restrictions: If the applicant is unable to complete a full-time vocational training due to a permanent illness, funding for a part-time vocational training can be applied for.
- Family Obligations: Applicants who care for children or provide care for relatives in need may also receive Bafög for part-time vocational training under certain conditions.
- Work-Related Further Training: For certain professional advancement trainings that are funded through the so-called Aufstiegs-Bafög, part-time funding is possible.
Requirements for Funding
To be granted Bafög for part-time vocational training, the following requirements must be met:
- The part-time vocational training must lead to a state-recognized qualification.
- The training institution must be state-recognized and the training must be considered eligible for funding.
- There must be a valid reason for the part-time vocational training, which can be documented with relevant proof (e.g., medical certificate, proof of caregiving responsibilities).
Amount of Funding
The amount of Bafög funding for part-time vocational training is determined by the individual needs of the applicant. However, the amount is usually proportionately reduced, as full-time vocational training serves as the basis for calculation. The exact amount is determined by the relevant office for educational support on a case-by-case basis.
Application Process
The application for Bafög for part-time vocational training is submitted, like that for full-time training, to the relevant office for educational support. In addition to the usual application documents, proof regarding the reason for the part-time vocational training must be submitted. This proof is crucial for the approval of funding.
Appeal in Case of Rejection
If the application for Bafög for part-time vocational training is denied, the applicant can file an appeal. The appeal must be submitted in writing and should be well-founded. If necessary, additional proof can be submitted later. In special cases, a judicial review of the decision can be requested.
Alternatives to Funding
If funding through Bafög is not possible, part-time vocational trainees can rely on alternative financing options. These include:
- Aufstiegs-Bafög: For professional further training in part-time, such as master or technician, the Aufstiegs-Bafög can be applied for.
- Scholarships: Various foundations offer scholarships for trainees in special life situations.
- Education Loans: The education loan from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) can be applied for irrespective of the form of training.
