Eligibility

Eligibility for Vocational Training Allowance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) to Finance Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

Eligibility for Vocational Training Allowance (BAB) applies to trainees in a dual Vocational Training (Ausbildung) whose income and that of their parents or spouses is insufficient to secure living expenses during the Vocational Training (Ausbildung).

Basic Requirements for Eligibility

Vocational Training Allowance (BAB) can be applied for by trainees who are in recognized dual Vocational Training (Ausbildung). A prerequisite is that the trainee has a training contract according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or the Crafts Code (HwO). Furthermore, the Vocational Training (Ausbildung) must take place in a company that is authorized for training.

Living Outside the Parental Home

There is a claim for BAB especially when the trainee lives outside the parental home during the Vocational Training (Ausbildung). If the parental home is near the training company and a relocation is not necessary, the claim usually ceases, unless the home situation necessitates independent living.

Income Limits

The Vocational Training Allowance (BAB) is only granted if the income of the trainee and the income of the parents or spouse do not exceed certain income limits. Both the Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) and parental income are considered after deduction of certain allowances. If the total income exceeds the established limits, the entitlement to BAB expires.

Age Limit

Basically, there is no rigid age limit for receiving BAB. However, the funding primarily targets young people who are completing their first Vocational Training (Ausbildung). For older trainees or individuals who already have a completed Vocational Training (Ausbildung), a case-by-case assessment is conducted.

Support for Vocational Preparation Measures

Besides trainees, participants in vocational preparation measures (BvB) may also be eligible for BAB. A condition is that the measure is funded by the Employment Agency and aims to acquire a training position.

Exclusion of Certain Groups

No claim for BAB exists for:

  • Trainees who have already received Vocational Training Allowance (BAB) or comparable benefits for a previous Vocational Training (Ausbildung)
  • Trainees in school-based Vocational Training (Ausbildung), as these can be funded by BAföG
  • Self-employed individuals who complete a Vocational Training (Ausbildung) independently without a training contract

Proof of Eligibility Requirements

To apply for BAB, corresponding proofs of the training contract, the income of the trainee, and the income of the parents or spouse must be submitted. The Employment Agency reviews the documents and decides on the basis of this regarding the entitlement.

Relevance for Trainees with Low Income

The Vocational Training Allowance (BAB) is particularly important for trainees with low Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) as it helps cover living expenses during the Vocational Training (Ausbildung). It serves as a central support for young people who rely on financial assistance during their Vocational Training (Ausbildung).
