The housing benefit office of the city or municipality where the applicant has registered their main place of residence is responsible for processing the housing benefit application. The housing benefit application must be submitted at the current residence of the applicant. If moving to another city or municipality, a new application is required at the housing benefit office of the new residence. In such cases, the previous eligibility for housing benefit ends with the move, and the benefit must be reapplied for.

The application can be submitted personally, in writing, or in many cases also online at the housing benefit office. Regardless of the submission method, all required documents must be fully presented. Incomplete applications may delay processing and could lead to rejection.

Additionally, online portals are often available where application forms can be downloaded or applications submitted digitally. Processing Time of the Application
The processing time for housing benefit applications generally takes four to six weeks. In individual cases, the process may take longer, especially if documents need to be submitted later or the application contains complex matters. Therefore, early application is recommended.

The housing benefit office may require the applicant to prove their main place of residence, for example, through a registration certificate. This ensures that the application has been submitted to the correct office and that responsibility is clear.
Notification Obligations of the Applicant
During the receipt of housing benefit, the applicant is obliged to inform the housing benefit office of any changes in personal or economic circumstances without delay. This includes changes in income, moving, or completion of vocational training (Ausbildung). Late notification may require the repayment of housing benefits.
Objection in Case of Rejection of the Application
If the application for housing benefit is rejected, the applicant has the right to lodge an objection in writing with the housing benefit office within one month. The objection should outline why the applicant believes the decision is unlawful. If needed, legal advice can be sought.
