Amount of the Allowance
In the Bafög system, the applicant’s income is considered for funding eligibility once it exceeds the specified allowance. The current monthly allowance for personal income stands at 520 euros. This means that income up to this threshold will not be deducted from the Bafög funding. This allowance is applicable regardless of whether the income is derived from dependent employment, self-employment, or other sources of income.
Consideration of Income Above the Allowance
Only the income that exceeds the monthly allowance of 520 euros will be used in calculating Bafög funding. The excess amount will be prorated across the approval period, thereby reducing the monthly Bafög benefit accordingly. The goal of this regulation is to ensure that applicants who work alongside their vocational training (Ausbildung) do not face undue disadvantages.
Special Allowances for Maintenance Obligations
If the applicant is obliged to provide maintenance to a spouse or their own children, the allowance increases accordingly. An additional monthly allowance of 570 euros is granted for each maintenance-dependent spouse or child. This ensures that a larger portion of the income remains exempt from consideration, easing the financial situation of the applicant.
Income from Minijobs
Income from Minijobs, where the monthly earnings do not exceed 520 euros, remains completely exempt from consideration, as it falls within the allowance. This makes Minijobs an attractive option for Bafög recipients to improve their financial situation without affecting their funding amount.
Particulars of Income from Self-Employment
Income from self-employment is also taken into account. The net income, which remains after deducting business expenses, is considered. If the net income exceeds the allowance, only the exceeding amount is counted toward the funding. Self-employed applicants must provide appropriate documentation, such as tax assessments or profit and loss statements, to verify their income.
Proof of Income
To ensure the allowance is correctly applied, the applicant is required to fully report all income and support it with suitable proof. Required documentation includes:
- Pay slips for dependent employment.
- Tax assessments and income determinations for self-employment.
- Certificates regarding other income, such as rental income or capital gains.
Impact on Funding
The allowance for personal income ensures that applicants working during their vocational training (Ausbildung) can retain a portion of their income without a reduction in their funding. Only the part of the income that exceeds the allowance is counted toward the Bafög benefit, thereby minimizing financial strain.
