No Fixed Age Limit
Unlike other state-funded support like child benefit, there is no strict age limit for Vocational Training Assistance (BAB). Eligibility exists regardless of the age of the trainee, as long as they are in a funding-eligible dual Vocational Training (Ausbildung) program and fulfill the other requirements.
First Vocational Training (Ausbildung) as a Requirement
Usually, BAB is granted only for the first Vocational Training (Ausbildung). Older trainees who already have completed a Vocational Training (Ausbildung) or degree can, in exceptional cases, receive support if the new training is necessary, for instance, due to a career change or retraining.
Support for Older Trainees
Older trainees who start a Vocational Training (Ausbildung) late can also receive BAB. The age limit does not play a role here. What matters is that the training is recognized under the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or the Crafts Code (HwO) and that there is eligible income.
Special Considerations for Preparation Measures
Participants in vocational preparation measures (BvB) can also apply for BAB. There is no age limit here either; however, the measures must be recognized and funded by the Employment Agency. The vocational preparation measure should aim to achieve a training position.
Relevance of Age for Parental Income
The applicant’s age may play an indirect role when considering parental income. For adult trainees who live outside their parental home, parents’ income is only considered if they are still obligated to provide support to the trainee. This obligation usually ends with the completion of the first Vocational Training (Ausbildung).
Impact of Age on Funding Amount
The age of the applicant has no direct influence on the amount of BAB granted. Key factors include the actual living costs, rent expenses, as well as the income of the trainee and their parents. Older trainees who may incur higher rent costs can, however, benefit from a higher BAB amount.
Additional Funding Opportunities
For older trainees who do not receive BAB, there are other funding opportunities, such as retraining programs or benefits under the Social Code II (SGB II). In such cases, it is advisable to seek advice from the Employment Agency to receive the best possible support.
Important Notes on Application Submission
Since there is no age limit for receiving BAB, individuals who start a Vocational Training (Ausbildung) after a long career break can also apply. It is crucial that the training is recognized and eligible for funding. Timely submission of the application before starting the Vocational Training (Ausbildung) is recommended to avoid financial difficulties.
