Reporting Changes for Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) to Finance Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

Changes such as income changes, change of residence, or changes in the training location must be reported to the Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) for financing Vocational Training (Ausbildung) to the responsible Employment Agency immediately, as they can influence the amount of support.

Obligation to Report Changes

Apprentices receiving Vocational Training Assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe) are required to report any significant changes in their personal, economic, or family circumstances to the Employment Agency immediately. This is to ensure that the amount of BAB benefits is calculated correctly to avoid overpayment or underpayment.

Income Changes

Changes in the income of the apprentice, their parents, or partner must be reported, as they can affect the amount of counted income. Examples of relevant income changes include:

  • Increase or decrease in Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung)
  • Starting or ending a part-time job
  • Changes in the income of parents (e.g., due to job change or unemployment)

Reporting should be done by submitting new income evidence.

Change of Residence

A move can affect the amount of BAB benefits, especially if rental costs change or the apprentice moves from their parental home to their own apartment. In such cases, the following documents must be submitted:

  • New rental agreement indicating rent and additional costs
  • Proof of residence for the new apartment

The change of residence must be reported immediately after moving in so that the housing allowance can be adjusted accordingly.

Change of Training Location

If the apprentice changes their training location or interrupts their training, this must be reported to the Employment Agency immediately. A change in the training location can affect the eligibility for BAB. Required documents include:

  • New training contract upon changing the training location
  • Written confirmation of the training interruption

Changes in Family Circumstances

Changes in family circumstances, such as marriage, the birth of a child, or separation from a partner, must also be reported. Such changes can lead to a recalculation of the BAB benefits.

Reporting Deadline

Changes must be reported within two weeks of their occurrence. Late reporting may result in the recovery of overpaid benefits or the apprentice temporarily not receiving payments.

Consequences of Failing to Report

If a change is not reported or is reported late, the Employment Agency may reclaim overpaid amounts. In serious cases, there may be legal consequences if the omission is considered deliberate deception.

Important Notes

Apprentices should submit changes in writing and with all necessary documents to the Employment Agency whenever possible. If there is uncertainty regarding reporting obligations, consulting the Employment Agency can be helpful.
