Mandatory Accident Insurance
In Germany, apprentices are mandatorily insured under the statutory accident insurance during their training (Ausbildung) according to § 2 of the Seventh Social Code (SGB VII). This accident insurance shields trainees from the financial repercussions of workplace accidents and occupational diseases. It covers both incidents at the workplace and commuting accidents that occur on the direct route to or from the training location.
Contribution Payment by the Training Company
Contrary to other branches of social insurance, the contributions to accident insurance are entirely borne by the training company. The apprentice doesn’t need to make any payments. The company registers the trainee with the responsible trade association or accident insurance fund and pays the necessary contributions.

The trainee will then receive necessary medical care from a qualified accident insurance doctor specializing in occupational accidents.
Commuting Accidents and Their Specifics
Commuting accidents are incidents that occur on the direct route between the home and the training facility or vocational school. The insurance coverage also applies if the apprentice makes detours related to their training (e.g., childcare drop-offs). However, accidents on private detours unrelated to the training (Ausbildung) are not covered.
Occupational Diseases
Occupational diseases are illnesses resulting from professional activities and are listed in the Occupational Diseases Ordinance. Apprentices suffering from a recognized occupational disease are entitled to benefits from the accident insurance, including medical treatment and, if necessary, vocational retraining.
