Accident Insurance on Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) during Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

Apprentices are secured by statutory accident insurance during their dual vocational training (Ausbildung). The contributions to the accident insurance are fully covered by the training company. This insurance encompasses accidents at the workplace, in vocational school, and during the commute to and from the training facility.

Mandatory Accident Insurance

In Germany, apprentices are mandatorily insured under the statutory accident insurance during their training (Ausbildung) according to § 2 of the Seventh Social Code (SGB VII). This accident insurance shields trainees from the financial repercussions of workplace accidents and occupational diseases. It covers both incidents at the workplace and commuting accidents that occur on the direct route to or from the training location.

Contribution Payment by the Training Company

Contrary to other branches of social insurance, the contributions to accident insurance are entirely borne by the training company. The apprentice doesn’t need to make any payments. The company registers the trainee with the responsible trade association or accident insurance fund and pays the necessary contributions.

Insurance Coverage

The statutory accident insurance coverage includes:

  • Workplace Accidents: Incidents that occur during activities in the company or vocational school.
  • Commuting Accidents: Accidents happening on the direct route to the training center or back home.
  • Occupational Diseases: Illnesses caused by professional activities and listed in the occupational diseases catalogue.

Benefits of Accident Insurance

The statutory accident insurance provides comprehensive benefits to restore the apprentice’s health and prevent long-term damage. Key benefits include:

  • Medical treatment and rehabilitation services
  • Transitional allowance during rehabilitation
  • Injury benefit as income replacement
  • Professional reintegration programs
  • Pension in case of permanent disability
  • Survivors’ pension in the event of the insured person’s death

Accident Reporting and Procedure

If an occupational or commuting accident occurs, it must be reported to the training company immediately. The company is obligated to report the accident to the relevant trade association or accident insurance fund if the apprentice is unable to work for more than three days due to the incident. The trainee will then receive necessary medical care from a qualified accident insurance doctor specializing in occupational accidents.

Commuting Accidents and Their Specifics

Commuting accidents are incidents that occur on the direct route between the home and the training facility or vocational school. The insurance coverage also applies if the apprentice makes detours related to their training (e.g., childcare drop-offs). However, accidents on private detours unrelated to the training (Ausbildung) are not covered.

Occupational Diseases

Occupational diseases are illnesses resulting from professional activities and are listed in the Occupational Diseases Ordinance. Apprentices suffering from a recognized occupational disease are entitled to benefits from the accident insurance, including medical treatment and, if necessary, vocational retraining.

Important Notes on Accident Insurance

Apprentices should stay informed about the insurance coverage and benefits of accident insurance. In the event of an accident, it’s crucial to notify the training company promptly and seek medical assistance if needed. For any questions regarding accident insurance, apprentices can contact the responsible trade association or accident insurance fund. The training company is required to provide the contact details of the relevant accident insurance institution.
