Dual Training

Training Situation: Dual Vocational Training (Ausbildung) for Receiving Vocational Training Assistance to Finance Training in Germany 2025

Eligibility for Vocational Training Assistance (BAB) only exists for trainees in a recognized dual vocational training governed by the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or the Crafts Code (HwO).

Definition of Dual Vocational Training

The dual vocational training is a training system that combines practical experience in a company with academic education. The trainee completes the practical part of the training at a business and simultaneously attends a vocational school. This form of training is widely spread in Germany and is offered in many professions.

Requirements for Dual Training

To qualify for Vocational Training Assistance (BAB), the dual training must meet certain requirements:

  • The training must be conducted in a recognized training occupation, regulated by the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) or the Crafts Code (HwO).
  • A written training contract between the trainee and the training company must be in place.
  • The training must take place on a full-time basis. Part-time training is only funded in exceptional cases.

Recognized Training Occupations

Vocational Training Assistance can be applied for all occupations considered recognized training occupations. This includes professions across various industries such as crafts, industry, commerce, healthcare, and services. A complete list of recognized training occupations can be obtained from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or the Chamber of Crafts (HWK).

Proof of Dual Training

To apply for BAB, proof of dual training is required. This is usually done by presenting the training contract and a certificate from the training company. The Employment Agency reviews the documents to ensure that the training is eligible for funding.

No Claim for School-Based Training

Trainees who undergo purely school-based training are not entitled to Vocational Training Assistance. School-based training is instead supported through BAföG, provided the relevant requirements are met. BAB is exclusively aimed at trainees in dual systems.

Funding for Retraining

In certain cases, retraining within the framework of dual training can also be funded through BAB. The condition is that the retraining occurs in a recognized training occupation and is conducted by a company. Prior consultation with the Employment Agency is recommended.

Duration of Funding

The Vocational Training Assistance is granted for the entire duration of the dual training, provided that the eligibility requirements remain in place during the training period. The funding ends with the successful completion of the training.

Importance of Dual Training for BAB

The dual vocational training is a central requirement for receiving Vocational Training Assistance. It enables young individuals to enter the workforce and is financially supported through BAB when the income of the trainees and their families is not sufficient to secure their livelihood during the training.
