Social Insurance (Sozialversicherung) on Vocational Training Compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung) in Vocational Training (Ausbildung) in Germany 2025

Vocational trainees are subject to social insurance (Sozialversicherung) obligations in Germany. Contributions to health, long-term care, pension, and unemployment insurance are deducted from the vocational training compensation (Ausbildungsvergütung). These social contributions (Sozialabgaben) serve to secure the vocational trainees in the respective areas of life.

Health Insurance

Apprentices are mandatorily insured under the statutory health insurance. The contribution rate is 14.6% of the gross income, plus a supplementary contribution dependent on the health insurance fund. The contributions are shared equally between the training company and the apprentice.

Retirement Insurance

Apprentices are mandatorily insured under the statutory retirement insurance. The contribution rate is 18.6% of the gross income and is equally shared between the training company and the apprentice. By making contributions, apprentices acquire entitlements to future pension payments.

Unemployment Insurance

Apprentices are mandatorily insured under statutory Unemployment Insurance. The contribution rate is 2.6% of the gross income and is equally shared by the training company and the apprentice. The contributions secure claims to Unemployment Benefits in the event of unemployment after vocational training (Ausbildung).

Long-term Care Insurance

Trainees are mandatorily insured in the statutory Long-term Care Insurance (Pflegeversicherung). The contribution rate is 3.05% of the gross income, and for childless trainees aged 23 and over, it is 3.4%. The contributions are split equally between the training company and the trainee.

Accident Insurance

Apprentices are secured by statutory accident insurance during their dual vocational training (Ausbildung). The contributions to the accident insurance are fully covered by the training company. This insurance encompasses accidents at the workplace, in vocational school, and during the commute to and from the training facility.
